Gas safe engineers

Gas safe register

If you have ever wanted proof that the person servicing your boiler is a legitimate gas engineer, then you will be pleased to know that there is already a system in place that can allow you to cross-check their legitimacy within the heating engineer industry in the form of the Gas Safe Register. Every gas engineer must be registered and are given a card as proof.

Once upon a time, the gas registration body in the United Kingdom was known as CORGI and every engineer had to be CORGI registered. However, in 2009 this changed to the gas safe register. The following year, Northern Island and Guernsey also changed to this gas registration body. By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register. The engineers will then be given a Gas Safe Registration card which can be checked online or on the phone at any time by the customer.

All Abbott Contractors engineers that undertake any heating work are Gas Safe Registered and we urge the customer to check to verify if they so wish. If works are being carried out on an oil boiler however, the engineer will not have to be Gas Safe Registered, as Oftec is the official governing body in this instance.

Other services offered by our gas engineers

There are a number of extra services we have yet to mention that our heating professionals can offer to solve your heating needs. These include:

Cap off

In cases whereby there will be some time before a new unit is installed, our engineers will cap off the pipework to ensure it is not tampered with. The pipes will be appropriately plugged with a fitting to ensure the gas supply is sealed off.

Disconnections & installations

We can send round one of our gas engineers to disconnect gas appliances such as gas cookers, tumble dryers and fires. Unfortunately, we do not repair gas appliances, however, we will install one that you have already purchased.

Powerflush

If more than one radiator is cold or faulty it could point towards you needing one thing: a powerflush. This is the process in which the inside surfaces of the central heating system is using a specialist power flushing machine.

Gas leaks

It is important for us to note that we can only deal with a gas leak once your property has been switched off by the supplier, National Grid. However, there are a few things we advise you to do if you smell gas in your property, these are:
A Gas Safe Engineer must carry out the checks. This work will include:

  • Leave the property, ensure everyone including pets leave the house.
  • Ensure you do not touch any light switches as you leave the property.
  • Call the National Grid on 0800 111 999.

A Gas Safe Engineer must carry out the checks. This work will include checking:

  • The operating pressure and heat input of the appliance to make sure it is working correctly
  • Any flue or chimney connected to the appliance is working properly
  • The appliance is suitable for the room it’s located in
  • The appliance is properly set up and gas is burning correctly
  • The appliance is correctly fitted and connected to the gas pipes
  • There is an adequate, permanent air supply so the gas can burn properly and cleanly
  • All safety devices are operating correctly
  • All accessible gas pipework is in good condition
  • Gas pipework will be tested for any leaks

When the National Grid arrives to turn off the gas at your property and it has been isolated, only then can we go to your property and check for the location of the leak and apply the appropriate repairs to the fault, if any are needed.
